Where it all began…

I was talking to one of my girls this morning & she asked when we started becoming aware & changing our life. I told her about working with Mary Kay & being a “big deal”, moving up in the company & the talk of earning the revered “pink car”. I decided to do an email search & lo and behold, I found the email below.
We’ve been on this journey since 2007 & my youngest girls don’t even remember where it all began because they weren’t even born yet.
When I first started researching and uncovering everything, it was not as easy as it is nowadays. I made a whole lot of people mad & lost some friends along the way. Through our journey, many followed along & lives were changed and healed. I am grateful for all of it.
I have become quieter and more reserved as time has passed. I didn’t think there was a space for my voice anymore. I have been praying through it and I know God is leading me. I realize as I look back and reminisce, I have been holding onto some trauma. I am ready to revisit things & help more people. I want to start at the beginning. God is leading the way & I am finding my voice once again. 🤍

Here is a copy of my letter to Mary Kay:

I have recently discovered that many of the products that I use regularly, the majority of those being Mary Kay, contain toxic chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects and other health problems. There are no limits imposed by the FDA for chemicals in cosmetics and no regulation of their health effects. In fact, 89% of ingredients used in products we use every day have not been tested for safety.

An average person may use as many as 25 different cosmetics products in a day. Up to 70% of what is applied to the skin is believed to be absorbed into the body. According to recent studies by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, hazardous chemicals are building up in all of our bodies, and diseases linked to chemicals - including breast cancer, testicular cancer and reproductive problems - are on the rise.

Products we use on our bodies should be safe for our health and that of our families. The good news is that many forward thinking cosmetics companies have signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics, a pledge to phase out toxic chemicals from their products and replace them with safer alternatives. More than 100 cosmetics companies have already made this commitment and more are joining every day. Find out more about the Compact at www.safecosmetics.org.

However, numerous companies, including Mary Kay, have refused to sign the Compact and have actively lobbied against safe cosmetics legislation in California.

As a concerned consultant, I urge you to make a commitment to health, product safety, and the planet by signing the Compact for Safe Cosmetics. I also ask that you cease lobbying against important legislation that aims to protect our health as Estee Lauder, L'Oreal, Unilever, Procter & Gamble, Avon, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Dial Corporation, Johnson & Johnson, and others recently did against safe cosmetics legislation in California.

Please understand that this is no small issue. I have repeatedly been contacted by customers regarding the safety of the ingredients in Mary Kay products. I have always been a little concerned, but I was very ignorant to the astonishing facts regarding this public health hazard. I have been researching this issue and have been shocked at my findings. These are not opinions, they are facts. In January 2003 the European Union amended their Cosmetics Directive to require cosmetic companies to remove all chemicals that are known or strongly suspected of causing cancer, mutation or birth defects from all personal care products sold in the EU beginning in 2004. Safe cosmetics are possible, and the EU's progress proves that companies can make products safer without disrupting the marketplace!

Mary Kay is a proud supporter of Breast Cancer Research, yet the chemicals in the products are contributing to the cause of breast cancer, testicular cancer, reproductive problems, birth defects, and more!

I am shocked that Mary Kay was not one of the first companies to commit to using safe ingredients in their products! We are supposed to have integrity! I refuse to use products that put the health of myself and my family at risk, this regretfully includes Mary Kay. I cannot support a company that is putting the health of its customers at risk. I refuse to promote and sell products containing hazardous chemicals! There are safer alternatives, so why not use them and protect public and environmental health?

I would like a response, updating me on the company's commitment to the Compact for Safe Cosmetics. If the company makes this commitment to our health, customers and consultants like myself will respond with our confidence and our loyalty. This issue will not simply be forgotten, the public is becoming more aware every day, so please act on this request today!
